Targeted Efficiency: Using Customer Meter Data to Improve Efficiency Program Outcomes (PhD ’14)
Sam’s works focuses on tools to scale up and improve the performance of energy efficiency programs in support of renewable energy integration and climate mitigation goals. His work combines insights from building science, behavioral sciences, and engineering to interpret patterns in building energy consumption and develop criteria for planning, targeting, executing, and evaluating improved programs. His dissertation utilizes a sample of smart meter data from over 150,000 California residences to develop and test methods for achieving these goals. It also addresses privacy concerns related to meter data and suggests strategies for protecting customer privacy while preserving beneficial uses of data.
